Book List:

New Edition: Baby Sense

The focus of this baby care title, with its accessible tone,
remains the three most common concerns of parents in their
baby's first year: crying, sleep and baby's development.

New and expanded sections include:

  • How different babies cope differently with sensory information.
  • How you can help your baby maintain the Calm-Alert state - the ideal state for learning.
  • The relationship between tiredness and crying.
  • More on breast-feeding.
  • More on colic, including a step-by-step response plan.

The new edition of Baby Sense is sure to hold the same appeal for parents in that it offers practical solutions for the common issues of infancy. The new content will enhance the ways parents respond to their baby's sensory needs in a sense-able manner. Baby Sense is your key to

  • A calm, contented, colic-free baby.
  • Establishing good sleep habits and enjoying peaceful nights.
  • Your baby's optimal development and positive early experiences."

MARCH BOOK REVIEW

Toxic Childhood: How the modern world is damaging our children and what we can do about it

"Children throughout the developed world are suffering: instances of obesity, dyslexia, ADHD, bad behaviour and so on are all on the rise. And it's not simply that our willingness to diagnose has increased; there are very real and growing problems.

Sue Palmer, a former head teacher and literacy expert, has researched a whole range of problem areas, from poor diet, lack of exercise and sleep deprivation to a range of modern difficulties that are having a major effect: television, computer games, mobile phones. This combination of factors, added to the increasingly busy and stressed life of parents, means that we are developing a toxic new generation. Toxic Childhood illustrates the latest research from around the world and provides answers for worried parents as to how they can protect their families from the problems of the modern world and help ensure that their children emerge as healthy, intelligent and pleasant adults." - Kalahari.net

Future-proof your child by Nikki Bush & Graeme Codrington

future proof book 3d 7

The central premise here is that, because of the rapid advances in science and technology, the world as we know it will not exist when our children are adults. How, then, do we prepare our children for something that we can barely conceive of? This book provides a sensible, practical guide to child-rearing in this rapidly changing world. It suggests some ideas of what the future looks like, it reminds us of how children learn (e.g. through repetition), it shows us how to really connect with our children and it outlines the life-skills that our children will need to succeed in the future. According to the authors, in order to prepare our children for things to come, we need to help them to become creative, empathetic, approachable individuals who embrace change and the challenges of lifelong learning; old school values that we now need to apply to a vastly different landscape. Thanks to Nikki and Graeme for a truly relevant book!

How To Really Love Your Child by Ross Campbell

"It is written in such a way that you know exactly what Ross Campbell, the author of the book, is trying to convey and I could even repeat it to my guests the next day.  However simple his advice is, this book helped us love all three our children in such a way that they never had any reason to be jealous of one another.  Each one of them had his or her own special day of the week that he or she enjoyed certain privileges and once a week both me and my husband spent some time out with one of them.  The other two always knew their turn was coming.

Ross Campbell's advice worked like a bomb.  I still advise parents to read and reread this book.  Amongst other things this book helped me to unconditionally love each one of my children and taught me how to fill their emotional tank, thereby diminishing the chances of tantrums and rivalry.  Today they are 19, 21 and 23 years old and they are already telling us how grateful they are for their upbringing.  What a bonus - all thanks to Ross Campbell and the grace of the Lord!”

"It is often said that 'only mom knows best'! With this in mind, Baby Sense launched The Calming Tip Campaign - an initiative where moms all over South Africa shared thousands of tips on how to calm, nurture and soothe their babies. Calming a younf baby is a challenge at the best of times and every mom can benefit from the tips of other parents. A Mother's Sense of Calm is a special way to share these wonderful tips with moms.

To capture the essence of each calming tip, celebrated photographer Pippa Hetherington captured images of African moms and dads soothing their little ones. Over 50 images make up the photographic element of the gift book.

"first-time parents" by Dr Miriam Stoppard

First-time parents

Dr Miriam Stoppard, the United Kingdom's most popular and trusted childcare specialist, provides a concise and sensible guide for first-time parents to
what it’s really like to have a baby and how to adapt to becoming a family.

You’ll learn everything you need to know; from what happens during pregnancy and birth, through to day-to-day babycare in the first year, including feeding, washing and dressing. There’s also guidance on adapting to parenthood and special features on common issues such as maintaining your relationship and going back to work.

I love the practical advice contained in this book e.g. how to approach nappy changes with boys and girls, the towel bath (a halfway house between "top and tailing" and a proper bath)...even tips on how to put on a babygrow. There is also guidance on very serious topics like caring for your sick baby and emergency first aid. All scary stuff to new parents.

This book is a great companion on the journey to parenthood!

Look for the revised edition, which was published in Great Britian in early 2009 and in South Africa in April 2009.
